Shri Mukesh D. Ambani, Shri Faqir Chand Kohli, Shri Rahul Bajaj, Members of the Board of Governors, Members of the Senate, distinguished guests, parents and guests of graduating students, colleagues and my young friends;
On behalf of the Institute, I have great pleasure in welcoming all of you to the 42nd Convocation of the
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. We are very privileged to have Shri Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest for today’s function.
Shri Ambani is a Chemical Engineer and is heading one of the most successful manufacturing companies in India, which has total revenues of over Rs. 80,000 crores. Under his leadership, the Reliance group is progressing at a rapid pace on several diverse areas including oil and gas, petrochemicals, polymers, power, telecommunication and infocom initiatives.
The Reliance Industries recently became the first Indian private company to be in the Fortune’s Global 500 list and has emerged as India’s most admired business house. Shri Mukesh Ambani is
one of the most respected business leaders in the world and his dedication to make India an economic super power makes him an excellent role model to address the young graduates today. I must mention that Shri Mukesh Ambani is a
Member of the Advisory Council of IIT Bombay and has contributed significantly to the growth of the Institute through his vision and invaluable inputs.
I am extremely happy to announce that in this Convocation, the Institute will honour Padma Bhushan Shri Faqir Chand Kohli, Former Deputy Chairman, Tata Consultancy Services, by conferring the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) for his
outstanding contributions to the growth of Information Technology in the country. Under his leadership, the Tata Consultancy Services grew from strength to strength making it a world class IT company.
Shri Kohli is known as the Father of the Information Technology revolution in the country.
We are very thankful to Padma Bhushan Shri Rahul Bajaj, the Chairman, Board of Governors of IIT Bombay, for guiding us towards becoming a truly world class institution. His passion for attaining excellence
in all our activities and support for improving our management systems has been most helpful. Under his guidance, the Institute-Industry interactions and entrepreneurship related activities are getting the much needed boost. We are indeed very privileged to have Shri Rahul Bajaj
in guiding IIT Bombay to greater heights in its education and research programmes.
We are very proud of our achievements in the 46 years since the foundation of IIT Bombay laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. His vision was that “….
the IITs should provide scientists and technologists of the highest calibre who would engage in research, design and development to help building the nation towards self-reliance in her technological needs …..”. We are proud to say that we have achieved a major part of
Pandit Nehru’s vision but have to continue to work at our best to become a leading technical institution in the world. In four years, we will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the Institute and comparing our achievements with that of great institutes around the globe in their first 50 years, we stand tall. Our education programmes are comparable to the best in the world and our graduates are highly sought after in all professional fields. The IIT brand name is clearly well established and recognized. However, in our research achievements, although we are amongst
the best in India, we have a long way to go to be counted amongst the best in the world.
We have a very vibrant faculty capable of delivering high quality education and research. Over the past five years, we have been putting in place systems to attract the best faculty and along side upgrade the infrastructure needed for research. We have been providing the ambiance for our faculty and students to live up to their highest potential. The
emphasis on research publications, attending national and international conferences, patenting etc., has increased over the years.
The increased emphasis on research led to enhancing our focus on postgraduate programmes. Out of the total student population of above 4600, nearly 60% students are enrolled in M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes. The number of doctoral students has crossed the 1000 mark this year, accounting for about 20%
of our student strength. The undergraduate research opportunities programme initiated last year has been very successful in engaging our bright young minds into the research culture early in their career. The Dual degree programme continues to be very successful.
Needless to say, we continue to strengthen our Bachelors and Masters programmes through upgradation of the curriculum and in the process keeping the students abreast of the latest developments in their respective fields. The assistantships and scholarships as well as
contingency grants for research scholars have increased. We have enhanced support to our students for participating in international conferences with the aim that they are exposed to
the international arena, exchange their ideas and interact with foreign scholars. These measures have paid dividends and the number of research scholars has increased and the quality of their research work has improved significantly.
In today’s world, recognizing that several fields of Science and Technology are inter-linked, we have initiated interdisciplinary programmes at the Masters level by introducing the concept of “Minor Areas”. Emerging areas such as Nanotechnology, Water Resource Engineering and Nuclear
Engineering will be amongst the first Minor Areas to be introduced. A specially prepared M.Tech. programme in Mechanical Engineering for Naval Officers from INS Shivaji has been approved for implementation from this academic year.
An important component of academic research is the dissemination and sharing of new knowledge through publications in reputed journals, papers presented at national and international conferences, monographs and books.
This year, we published about 700 papers in national and international journals. The faculty also contributed to publication of 51 books/monographs/chapters in
books. In addition our faculty and students presented about 600 papers in national and international conferences.
In this year’s convocation, over 1100 degrees will be awarded for students successfully completing their undergraduate or postgraduate requirements.
During the year 2003-2004, more than 100 leading companies participated in conducting campus interviews and a large number of students have secured attractive jobs.
A number of new awards and prizes for students have been introduced this year for excellence in academic research through the generous donation of Alumni and well
The Continuing Education Programme (CEP) caters to training in emerging areas of technology and assists in keeping the knowledge base of working professionals up to date. The activities of CEP include conducting “open” courses, which are open to all, and tailor-made “in-house” training to specific industries & organizations. Regular Postgraduate level courses are made available to working professionals and similar courses are also
offered under the Distance Education Programme. During the year over three thousand persons participated in 143 CEP courses conducted by the Institute and the earnings through CEP activities was
around Rs.1.90 crores.
The Distance Education Programme of the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, which was launched two years ago, conducted 24 courses in which about 2000
students participated. Participants, were awarded certificates after successful completion of the course.
Some of the well-attended Open courses during the year were - Piping Engineering, Application of SEA to Vibration and Noise, Casting Design and Analysis, Analog VLSI Design, Bioinformatics, Rapid Prototyping and Tooling, Condition Monitoring using
Machinery Vibration, Elements of Microelectronics, Intelligent Product Design and Manufacturing.
Some of the In-house courses conducted during the year were - Reviewing Plans for Air Pollution Control Devices, Certification Course on Advanced Programming (C++), Orientation Programme on Construction and Maintenance of Rural Roads, Sedimentary
Facies and Basin Analysis
The new initiatives taken this year were:
* One-year Open Course on “Marketing Management”, being run in New Delhi.
* A Vertical Interaction Course on “Role of Technology in Crime and Crime
Prevention”, conducted for 24 Senior IPS Officials representing twelve States,
NSG and Police academies.
* Course on “Client Technologies and Database Programming” was designed and
conducted exclusively for participants from Nigeria.
As a part of the “Student Outreach program of the Aeronautical Society of India”, faculty members of Aerospace Department organized 12 programmes to spread awareness regarding aircraft and aerospace technology among the 9th and 10th standard students in
various parts of Maharashtra, including the Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai, and the Institution of Engineers, Pune.
The Institute has continued to lay stress on the Research and Development activities through projects sponsored by external agencies. The current year witnessed an
upswing in the R&D activities along with many new initiatives in the Institute. A special emphasis and drive was put on attracting research funds from the industry and it has paid rich dividends. In addition, the
institute continues to attract a sizeable number of consultancy assignments from a wide range of industries.
As in preceding years, nearly 200 new sponsored projects were initiated with a sanctioned outlay of about Rs.37 crores, which entailed funding from various
national and international organizations as well as various industries. The funds received for the various new and ongoing sponsored projects in the year was more than Rs.30 crores. The sanctioned outlay nearly doubled that of
last year and the funds received marked an increase of about 30% over last year. In addition, the institute supported a number of projects internally in specialised areas of Cross Disciplinary Research Groups. The Institute provides suitable
start-up funds in the form of seed grants to new faculty helping them establish in their research activities.
Government agencies continue to provide major funding for sponsored projects. These include DST, MHRD, ISRO, DAE, DRDO, DBT and MICT. The Department of Science and Technology funded more than 30 new projects along with 50 ongoing projects in various areas of Science & Technology. Special funding was received towards establishing the following:
* Regional Facility for Isothermal Titration Calorimetry in Biologically important systems.
Facility for Protein Sequencing phase II.
facility for Texture and Orientation Imaging Microscopy.
Grants were also received for the implementation of projects under the Funds for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure (FIST) programme of DST, the Fast Track scheme for Young Scientists, the Swarnajayanti Fellowship and also for two
“Better Opportunities for Young Scientists in Chosen Areas of Science and Technology” (BOYSCAST) Fellowships. An Indo-Italian collaborative project on Advance Techniques for Remote Sensing Image Processing was supported under International programmes.
Ministry of Human Resources Development funded 44 new projects under three schemes namely:
* Research and Development (R&D),
* Modernisation & Removal
of Obsolescence (MODROBS),
* Thrust Area Programme in Technical Education
Indian Space Research Organisation funded about 20 new and ongoing projects in several areas.
The Department of Atomic Energy funded more than 30 new and ongoing projects. Support was received from several Defence Establishments. Other major governmental funding agencies were Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Department of Bio-technology, and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research including projects under the New Millennium India Technology
Leadership Initiatives scheme.
The Department of Information Technology, through CDAC, supported a research initiative of setting up a Research and Training Centre for Information and
This year, we entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore which is considered to be the leading research institution in India.
Together, we wish to pool our resources so that our faculty can take up projects jointly to make a major impact in the country. We continue to work closely with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the University of Pune through existing MoUs.
Industry participation in sponsored research showed significant growth. Industries such as Conexant Systems India Pvt. Ltd.,
Electrotherm (I) Ltd., HDFC Bank Ltd., Indus Biotherapeutics Ltd. and Tata Consultancy Services initiated a number of projects.
In addition, several student projects, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, were sponsored by several Industries including
Larsen & Toubro, ATE Ind. Pvt. Ltd., Schlumberger Asia Services Ltd., Patni Computer System Ltd. and Escorts Ltd.
International organizations such as Wadhwani Foundation, Volkswagen Stiftung Foundation, International Foundation for Science,
Microsoft Research, Synopsys Inc., UTC, EU-ASIA IT&C Programme and the World Bank supported various Research programmes at the Institute.
Some of the significant sponsored projects/achievements in the current year:
& Village Industries Commission has initiated the setting up a Technology Interface Unit at the Institute. The projects undertaken in the first phase include Development of Pedal Power Packs as Renewable Energy Source, Jaggery Processing and Product Packaging Alternatives, Activated Carbon and other value-added products
from Lignocellulosic Wastes, and Development of Solar Air Heater unit suitable for heating honey storage space.
* A Food Engineering Laboratory is in the process of
being set up with funding from Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
* A major project on synthesis of nanostructured
magnetic materials funded by Department of Science & Technology was initiated.
successful project on centrifuge modeling of steel sheet piles in clay was completed for the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, using the National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility at the institute.
The consultancy activities continued to show an upward trend with fund receipts of Rs.8.6 crores, a 10% increase over the last
year, portraying very encouraging trend in the industry institute interaction. Consultancy activities spanned across various national and international organizations including governmental agencies and industry. Work was undertaken in several areas and some representative ones were:
* Advice on technical
matters such as structural designs, IT implementation, etc.
* Specialised flat pattern development software
* Design of microwave circuits and antenna systems
* Developing radiation hard CMOS technology
* Product design and visual communication
* Formal verification of on-board software
* GPS studies
* Interactive Website
* Master plan for Metro Network and Transportation Network planning
* Recuperator for Micro Gas Turbine
* Wireless Cell Planning Tool
* Process Optimisation and Improvement
* CFD Analysis of Dust Ingress in Vehicles
* Competency Assessment Exercise
Development and transfer of several technologies from the institute continued to enhance its image as an able provider of technological solutions. Some of the important technologies in this category are
CFDTutor as a tool to learn Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), was developed at the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering to provide options to different users to experiment with and learn CFD. This is being marketed by different
agencies in various regions of India.
* ASAN the Low Cost ATM
ASAN, the attractive new low cost ATM, was designed by Industrial Design Centre, incorporating elements from traditional Indian architecture and the design rights transferred to NCR Corporation India Pvt. Ltd. The ATMs have
been installed by various banks across the country.
* Development of composite Sky Bus coaches
The “Skybus” devised by Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., has been seen as an innovative, least obtrusive and cost-effective solution to the transportation problems of metro cities. IIT Bombay has been involved in the design and development of composite Skybus
coaches under a TIFAC Project. Fabricated by Kineco Ltd., Goa, the prototype of the coach is designed with a stainless steel skeleton and FRP side, roof and side paneling for corrosion resistance coupled with light weight.
* Pulse Tube Cryo-cooler
With funding from the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), a state-of-the-art technology for Stirling type Pulse Tube Cryo-cooler (15 W capacity at 77K) has been developed at the Mechanical Engineering Department. The technology with much higher efficiency
than other cryo-coolers, finds applications in re-condensation of nitrogen gas for MRI shield cooling, liquefaction of hydrogen and oxygen for space applications, and helium liquefaction for SQUID.
* A key board for text input of Indian languages
The Industrial Design Centre (IDC) has worked on designing alternative mechanisms for text input in Indian languages, initially focusing on Devnagari. Amongst several alternatives, a keyboard called Key-Lekh was developed with a goal to enable persons familiar with Devnagari to use it with minimal instructions. The underlying concept of the design of Key-Lekh is based on the ‘Varnamala’-the well-structured Indian alphabetic system. The prototype was subjected to extensive tests by users in various age groups through road shows and competitions held on the campus.
* Design & development of Novel 3-in-1 heat pump
A hybrid System for Air-cooling, Cold- and Hot-water generation (SACH), which combines the functions of air-conditioning, water heating, and potable water-cooling has been developed at the Mechanical Engineering Department. Potentially useful in community and
residential places, the 3-in-1 heat pump was successfully demonstrated in hostels and residences of IITB campus. In the hostels, the system provides air-conditioning in the inadequately ventilated computer rooms, heats tap water for
use in the kitchen and bathrooms, and cools drinking water in the dining hall. The initial capital cost for this system is lower than the combined cost of conventional methods, with an additional 60 to 70% reduction in the operational cost.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Activities
The institute actively promoted awareness of IPR issues among faculty and students, which resulted in a higher number of patent applications filed during the year. In order to provide an enhanced thrust in this area, a unit was set up to coordinate
activities related to intellectual property and knowledge management at the Institute. The activities of the IPR unit include dissemination of knowledge and information on IPR amongst the Institute community and facilitating filing of patents, copyrights, etc.
The patenting activity at the institute showed very encouraging trend with a number of students contributing as co-inventors and developing awareness of
the various patenting procedures and issues. This year several Indian patents, PCT and US applications were filed, which included complete Indian applications from previous provisional filings, new provisional and complete Indian applications, and PCT and US filings
claiming priority from earlier Indian filings. Some of the areas included air-conditioning and refrigeration, separation techniques, heat exchanger, improved mixing and heat transfer, electronics and telecommunications, waste treatment processes, power distribution systems, novel methods of learning mathematical fractions, text input devices, communications and object
Some other recent IPR related activities were:
* An elective course on ‘Intellectual Property Rights for Technology Development and Management’ was introduced in the
institute in 2003 for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
* A two-day PAN-IIT IPR Workshop was organised in February 2004 targeted at all the IITs and other academic
institutions. The workshop was made possible by spontaneous and honorary participation of a delegation of distinguished
American IP experts and industry representatives, who provided an insight into the current status of IPR issues at the
number of seminars were conducted in IPR issues related to IP policy, patenting and copyrights.
With a large pool of excellent faculty expertise ranging over many areas of science and engineering disciplines, the institute has persistently promoted effective
interaction with industry to address their needs. In addition to consultancy for solving short-term problems and technology development, the current focus is to expand interactions to a multi-dimensional mode by building strong R&D partnerships with the industry. In this mode, IIT Bombay provides faculty expertise, infrastructure and advanced facilities, while the
partnering industry provides financial support as well as relevant technical support with an aim to develop technologies of the next generation.
Over the recent past, extensive interaction has taken place with a large number of companies through workshops and other modes, towards establishing roadmaps for
collaborative research. A number of projects have been initiated due to these efforts, including a multi crore project from ONGC.
As a result of this initiative, MoUs for developing collaborative programmes were
signed with a number of companies, some of which are:
* Infosys Technologies Limited, Bangalore
* National Thermal Power Corporation
* Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited
* Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited
* Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, CSIR
* Bharat Earth Movers Ltd.
* United Technology Corporation, USA
The other companies with whom interactions have begun include Bajaj Auto Ltd., Cummins India Ltd., Pidilite Industries Ltd., USV
Ltd., Dupont, USA, General Electric, General Motors, Tata Consulting Engineers and Honeywell Technology Solutions Ltd.
The Intel VLSI Design Laboratory was jointly inaugurated by the Director, Prof. Ashok Misra and the President of Intel Technology India, Mr. Ketan Sampat on September 1, 2003.
To mark the occasion, Mr. Sampat formally handed over the name board of the Design Centre to the Director.
A number of R&D Programmes of Direct Societal Relevance were pursued with success. Some of these initiatives
* Ascender, the wheelchair:
‘Ascender’, the newly developed upgraded and improved wheelchair for more effective and independent use, especially by handicapped persons was designed by the Industrial Design Centre.
This provides higher level of operational freedom and self-reliance to the user and makes transfer of persons to and from the wheelchair easier. The new design allows easy transportation and assembly of the parts. Utilizing newer materials and joining methods, Ascender embodies a strong visual appeal.
* Bio-Char Unit for Charcoal Production
A simple-to-operate, non-polluting Bio-char Unit (BCU) has been developed at Energy Systems Engineering, sponsored by the National Mission on Bamboo Applications (NMBA). Initially
developed for bamboo waste, the unit can be used for other non-powdery biomass with minor modifications. The uniqueness of BCU lies in using the otherwise polluting gases as a thermal energy source. The Bio-Char Unit is expected to help generate rural employment, and ensure village energy security.
* K-Yan: The Compact Media Centre
A compact media product for community use, developed by the
Industrial Design Centre, combines the functions of a multimedia and internet enabled PC, large format television, DVD/VCD/CD player, CD writer, video-conference device, LCD data projector and an audio system that facilitates shared viewing and participation by users. Launched in March 2004 at the major event “IT.Com” held in Bangalore, K-Yan is easy to use, has multilingual facilities and eliminates the need for investing in other media hardware.
Nanotechnology at IITB
As a part of the new initiatives, the institute has initiated focused discussion to promote futuristic technology to which the institute faculty is contributing actively and promote collated and centralized research in such areas. As a start, two in-house symposia on Nanotechnology at IITB were held during the year when
the institute-wide research activities on nanomaterials, nanoelectronics and nanobiotechnology were show-cased through presentations by faculty, scientists, and posters on research mostly carried out by research scholars. A number of action points are being addressed to provide a thrust and focus to further research in this
* IIT Bombay Research Fellowship
A new initiative called IIT Bombay Research Fellowship Scheme was undertaken to enhance awareness among young individuals from all over India about the high quality research being carried out in IIT Bombay, and to enable them to contribute and participate in the same. Around 40 students have been selected under this
scheme through summer internships to carry out research work in various ongoing sponsored research projects.
* New Consultancy Rules and Practices
A revised and simplified formulation of the Consultancy Practices Rules and Norms was approved by the Board of Governors and is now in force.
* Technology Business Incubator
A Technology Business Incubator (TBI) is being set up at the Institute with major funding from Department of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Communication & Information Technology. This is expected to help form start-up companies, exploiting IP generated by
faculty and students. This will be governed by the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), which will provide a platform for various entrepreneurial activities such as incubation/commercialization of technologies developed
at IIT Bombay, bidding for competitive R&D projects, creation of joint ventures etc.
UPDATE, the R&D Newsletter has been an effective tool to provide information dissemination on the research related activities in the Institute. In the past year, it focused on Nano-technology, Multimedia and Bamboo Crafts and published various articles contributed by faculty/scientists.
Media Lab Asia programmes at IIT Bombay in conjunction with the Development Gateway Foundation’s Research and Training Centre
also located at the Institute, has been developing and deploying solutions based on Information and Communication technologies for bridging the digital divide with aim to empower India’s masses.
Currently, there are three umbrella projects being undertaken by researchers at Media Lab Asia - IIT Bombay. These are:
This project aims to develop a multilingual meaning based search engine, which can take queries in the local language and return results in the same language. This project was initiated keeping in mind that most of the people in India are denied the huge wealth of information present on the web simply because they do not
know English, the lingua franca of the web.
2. Interfaces for all
This project focuses on the design and evaluation of devices and interfaces for computer users. Issues surrounding usability of computers relating to non-computer savvy users and vernacular language computing are some of the issues being addressed.
The research results from these two projects have been used to develop aAQUA, an online multilingual, multimedia Question and Answer based community forum for disseminating information from and to the grassroots of the Indian Community. aAQUA provides language independent
discussion services which are not limited to text and can have audiovisual elements to provide a simple, yet rich interface accommodating novice users. aAQUA has been deployed since the end of 2003 and has been addressing rural problems in several clusters of villages near Pune. In this endeavour it collaborates with Vigyan Ashram of Pabal and Krishi Vigyan Kendra of
The efforts of Media Lab Asia have also led to the development of a Devanagari keyboard and Bhav-Puchiye, an iconic tool for finding market prices for the agricultural produce for farmers. Both of these have been successfully
deployed in rural kiosks.
Presently, the purity of water in our increasingly polluted environment can only be tested in laboratories using expensive equipment and highly trained technicians. This project aims at providing a low-cost and easy method of
testing the impurities in water, with low-cost, rugged and tropicalised conducting polymer sensors.
Institute Strategy and Planning Committee
A few years ago we identified our Vision “To be the fountainhead of new ideas and innovators in Technology and Science”.
The Institute Strategy and Planning Committee has been working towards transforming the strategy road map into actions. During the past year, the Committee has made progress in implementing some of the recommendations of the Institute’s Vision and Mission document.
An important recommendation of the Vision document refers to increased research focus. The Institute Strategy and Planning Committee has taken several steps in this area.
Firstly, it has recommended the purchase of several sophisticated equipment to strengthen research. These have now been acquired, and have started functioning in the Institute. They include a state-of-the-art ESCA/AES machine, a confocal microscope, a reactive ion etcher, and upgradation of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscope
and Transmission Electron Microscope facilities. These have significantly enhanced the potential for research in the Institute.
Secondly, the ISPC has identified six thrust areas for the Institute. We believe that these thrust areas will be important research areas for us in the coming years, though of course research in all other areas will flourish as well. These Institute Thrust Areas are Nanotechnology, Earthquake
Engineering, Broadband Communication, Data Based Systems, Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. All of these areas are key areas in the national context as well as at the cutting edge in international research.
Finally, on a smaller scale, we have initiated twelve new “Cross-Disciplinary Research Groups” in the Institute, with the intention of promoting research interaction
between faculty and students cutting across departments. These groups, typically consisting of younger faculty members, have been receiving a modest amount of funding from the Institute.
Recent times have been excellent for IIT Bombay in terms of recruiting faculty. About 100 new faculty members joined the
Institute over the last two years. The faculty strength crossed the 400 mark for the first time in the Institute, coming close to the sanctioned strength of 425.
This has been possible due to our proactive and aggressive recruitment policies. The Institute gives the new faculty a sizeable startup grant to establish and initiate their research activities. With the induction of new faculty, the average age of the faculty has come
down and the future growth of the Institute is reassured. It is noteworthy that more than 50% of the new faculty have their doctorate degrees from foreign countries, thus indicating the return of our bright young people back to India.
A Faculty Academic Network (FAN), for bringing together faculty members of IIT Bombay and those alumni of IIT Bombay who are in faculty positions in the United States of
America, has been very active since its inaugural meeting in USA last year. At that meeting, many mechanisms, by which our alumni would work closely with IIT Bombay for enhancing its Research and Educational programmes, were identified and action plans were finalized. One of
the major areas that our alumni help significantly is in identifying good prospective faculty candidates.
The second FAN meeting was held in May 2004 and the focus was to develop close interactions in selected emerging areas in Science & Technology.
The areas selected for this year were:
* Nano-electronics, Nano-materials, Nano-bioscience
* Entrepreneurship and Technology Management
I am happy to report that these interactions have been very fruitful and IIT Bombay together with our alumni are planning to organize an International Symposium in Nano-electronics, Nano-materials and Nano-biosciences, in the near future.
In addition, the FAN meetings focused on sharing of best practices in various US Universities. Deans of Engineering and Sciences
at four leading US Universities attended the meeting and shared their views on Governance to enhance excellence in teaching and research.
The faculty of the Institute continue to contribute intensively in diverse ways including educational and research pursuits, meeting corresponding national
and global obligations through membership of various National Committees, reviewing manuscripts for publications and editorship for journals. We are proud that their efforts have received recognition in the form of several awards and distinctions.
1. Prof. Kanchan Pande, Earth Sciences, has been bestowed with the prestigious Shanti Swarup
Bhatnagar Award of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research for the year 2003, for Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.

Fellow, Indian National Academy of Engineering.
3. Prof. R.K. Shevgaonkar, Electrical Engineering, was elected as a Fellow, Indian National

5. Prof. Tarun Kant, Civil Engineering, was elected as Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences.
6. Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Electrical Engineering, was
elected as a Fellow, National Academy of Sciences India.
7. Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Electrical Engineering, received the Swarnajayanti Fellowship
in Engineering Sciences.
8. Prof. Vijay G. Ukadgaonker, Mechanical Engineering, was elected as a
Fellow, American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
9. Prof. K. V. Subbarao, Earth Sciences, received an International Award of the Third World
Academy of Sciences 'TWAS Prize in Earth Sciences for 2003', for his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the linkages between the oceanic and Deccan volcanism.
10. Prof. S.C. Lakkad, Deputy Director was honoured by the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
11. Prof. Sumantra Dutta Roy, Electrical Engineering, received the Young Engineer Award from the Indian
National Academy of Engineering.
12. Prof. H. C. Sheth, Earth Sciences, has been conferred the INSA Young Scientist Medal and selected as
a Young Associate of Indian National Science Academy.
13. Prof. M. S. Balakrishna, Chemistry, was elected as a Fellow, Royal
Society of Chemistry (FRSC).
14. Prof. V. S. Raja, Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, was
awarded the ‘Mascot National award’, in recognition of Corrosion Research and it’s Application to Industries, by The Electrochemical Society of India.
15. Prof. T. S. Rathore, Electrical Engineering, received the ISTE
Maharashtra National Award.
16. Prof. Amiya Kumar Pani, Mathematics, was nominated as a Senior Associate of The Abdus Salam
International Centre for Theoretical Physics.
17. Prof. P. L Trivedi and Prof. B. Ravi of Mechanical Engineering Department as members of the IIT-Bombay
team, were honoured by the then Prime Minister, Shri A.B. Vajpayee for the draft on manufacturing policy titled ‘Made in My India’.
18. Prof. S. S. Jha, Physics, was conferred with an Honorary Professorship of the Tata Institute of
Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
Fellow of the Institute was conferred on Dr. P.S. Goel, Director, ISRO Satellite Centre.
* The title of “Professor Emeritus” was conferred upon Prof.
G.V. Dass who retired from the Department of Physics in 2001.
Time Achievement Award of the Institute was conferred upon Prof. S.L. Narayanamurthy who retired from the Department of Chemical Engineering in 2003.
One of the major challenges that faces any Institute is to continue to retain its position of excellence, and whenever possible, to improve upon the same. In addition to academic inputs, it requires substantial financial resources for continued modernization and removal of obsolescence. The Government of India, through the MHRD continues to be the primary source of funds for the Institute. Sponsored projects,
industrial consultancy and Continuing Education Programs contribute about 25% of our annual income.
For the last few years, we have been attempting to augment the above resources by raising funds through donation from our alumni, who have always
been very supportive of their alma mater. During the last year, we received donations of over Rs. 5.85 crores from our alumni, through the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund in USA. These funds were earmarked for the establishment of several endowments towards awards, prizes and scholarships and for hostel development. The year saw the completion of the Girish Gaitonde Seminar Hall Complex
of the Department of Electrical Engineering, the funds for which was donated by Shri Girish Gaitonde, an alumnus of the Department. In addition to the generous donation received from abroad, the Institute also received donations from
several companies and well-wishers within the country towards various academic purposes.
Some of the major donations received during the year were from the following:

(i) Renovation of laboratories and lecture rooms,
(ii) Manudhane Excellence Awards.
2. Shri Rajesh Mashruwala for Mechanical Engineering to be used for:
(i) Establishment of state of the art MEMS laboratory,
(ii) Renovation of laboratories.
3. Shri Rakesh Mathur for:
(i) The “ S.C. Bhattacharya Award”, for outstanding research in pure sciences,
(ii) The “H.H. Mathur Award”, for outstanding research in applied sciences,
(iii) The “Rakesh Mathur Academic Excellence Award”, to the student who secures the highest CPI at the end of third year in B.Tech./Dual degree programme,
4. Shri Bala Shagrithaya towards the subscription for Sci Finder in the Library.
5. Shri Paritosh Choksi for “Mrinalini Choksi Wing” in Hostel-13.
6. Shri Romesh Wadhwani for Electronics Laboratory in Electrical Engineering
7. Shri Dhrumil Gandhi for establishment of a Visiting Chair Professorship in Electrical
Construction of a housing complex for the faculty comprising of 60 B-type flats is under way to overcome the shortage of suitable accommodation for faculty. This will be a 16-storeyed tower, located near the hill side. A significant amount of rehabilitation work was undertaken which includes buildings, renovation of hostels, addition/alterations in various departments, augmentation of water supply, widening of roads,
construction of foot-paths etc. Other major issues like sewage disposal, water conservation, restoration of Powai lake were also undertaken. Construction of Girish Gaitonde Lecture Hall Complex has been completed and it is being used by the Electrical Engineering Department for
various activities. Due importance was also given to provide excellent sports facility for the inter-IIT meet, e.g. synthetic coated tennis court, volley ball court with flood light arrangement, etc. To keep the campus green, tree plantation programme was arranged during the
monsoon period in which students from various colleges including IIT Bombay participated in planting around 1500 trees on the hill slope of the campus.
Architectural drawings have been prepared to construct a New Lecture Hall Complex and Civil Engineering Annexe. The 5-storeyed
building will have halls of 300, 150 and 40 seating capacity and can also provide adequate space to meet the requirements of the Civil Engineering Department.
Wells have been constructed in the gymkhana ground for the conservation of water and the same ground water is being used for the development of lawns and gardens.
De-silting of Powai lake was carried out to the extent of 600 cubic meters quantity and the same silt is being used for development of lawns, gardens in the campus. The proposal for development of land of 90 acres across the pipeline is in progress. Entry of leopards has
been largely arrested, by providing 10 ft. high fencing along the hostel side, from hostel 12 & 13 upto Hostel-1.
Central Library at the Institute strives to connect outstanding faculty and brilliant students to the knowledge and state of the art of their disciplines, and thereby
strengthens the aspirations and expectations of the research and teaching work at IIT Bombay. The Central Library, one of the largest libraries in science, engineering and technology in the country, is truly a knowledge hub of IIT Bombay and continues to acquire, organize and disseminate knowledge.
In addition, it has put in place policies and procedures, systems and services, and created an ambience which facilitates assimilation and generation of new knowledge. It spent Rs.4.90 crores during the year to update its collection with new sources of knowledge. The total collection of library currently
stands at 3.84 lakhs of volumes.
The Library is a member of the INDEST Consortium, through which it provides electronic online access to most of the leading journals in Science & Engineering,
inclusive of full text databases like Science Direct and bibliographic databases such as INSPEC, Chemical Abstracts, Mathematical Reviews, etc.
The library has taken upon itself the task of helping other libraries in their modernization efforts. In this connection, we
organised a workshop this year on “optimal use of e-resources” which was attended by representatives of libraries all over India.
The Computer Centre continued to provide computational and internet facilities in the Campus. The academic activities in the
institute demand more of internet facilities and to meet this, total internet bandwidth was increased up to 12 Mbps. Two new internet bandwidths from VSNL and Bharti Telecom has been added to the existing internet links.
Computer Centre also popularized the use of Linux among the administrative staff and Faculty. For this Linux training sessions were conducted.
This will help in minimizing the virus attacks, currently a hurdle in the network performance. Computer Centre has set up an electronic class room equipped with multimedia devices.
We have continued to increase institutional linkages with academic and research institutions in various countries including USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, U.K., South
Africa, Korea, and Singapore. These linkages develop synergy through optimum use of human resources and research facilities, and enable us to generate the critical mass and growth in thrust areas through faculty exchanges and interactions. We feel that it is also important for us to disseminate knowledge of our research output and capabilities, which is essential
towards our attaining “world-class” status.
In addition, we have established links with institutes of engineering in Nepal and Cambodia, primarily towards helping their faculty and students to enhance their
qualifications, and improve the quality of their academic programmes. These are part of our efforts towards technological capacity building in our neighbourhood.
Alongside, the Institute has encouraged exchange of students between IIT Bombay and foreign universities both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Last year
we had 25 exchange-students stay at IIT Bombay for periods ranging from one semester to a year and had 3 of our students spend a semester at partner institutions abroad. In addition, 71 of our undergraduate students have spent their Summer terms in research labs abroad. We have begun to take proactive steps towards attracting a limited number of highly talented
students from abroad for our postgraduate programmes. A major thrust has been given by the Ethiopian Government, which has sent 21 students for postgraduate studies at IIT Bombay. In this regard, H.E. Dr. Teketel Forssido, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Ethiopia visited IITB to get feedback on the students studying here, and to explore the possibilities of working out a long
term programme in area of faculty and information exchange.
During the year, a number of other delegations from all parts of the world visited IIT Bombay to establish interactions with our Institute primarily because of the excellent
reputation that the Institute enjoys in the international academic and research community. Notable amongst this was a delegation from Germany, headed by the Minister-President of Bavaria, during whose visit an MoU was signed with the Friedrich-Alexander University at Erlangen-Nurmberg, a renowned technological university in Germany. A delegation from the Max Planck
Society including the Directors of three of the Max Planck institutes visited IIT Bombay to give lectures and initiate discussions in fields of mutual interest. A delegation from University of New South Wales, Australia visited us to initiate discussions on possibilities of collaboration, and we have since then agreed to
focus on research collaborations in four thrust areas of mutual interest.
The alumni of the Institute are a vibrant lot and continue to make very significant contributions in several professional areas, viz. industry, academics, research, corporate
management, entrepreneurship and public services. They have very warm feelings for their alma mater and are extremely supportive in several activities that we undertake for the growth of the Institute.
The IIT Bombay Heritage Fund (IITBHF), established in USA, as well as our alumni from India has helped the Institute immensely by mobilizing significant amounts of funds for
various critical activities of the Institute, including infrastructure development, Chair Professorships and awards of various kinds. Recently, the IITBHF has helped us in establishing a relationship between alumni in academic positions in USA and our faculty, through the establishment of a Faculty Academic Network (FAN). This has helped in mobilizing knowledge resources and establishing research linkages in several areas of engineering
and science with leading US Universities.
The IIT Bombay Alumni Association, an independent section 25 company floated by our alumni in India, has organized many events during the year. Notable amongst them was a
workshop “Jal Sangrah Shibir” on water management and rain-water harvesting attended by many eminent people and a debate on “Was Satyendra Dubey’s Death in Vain?” attended by eminent journalists, alumni and students from all the IITs.
The Institute recognizes the achievements of its alumni through the Distinguished Alumni Awards, which were presented on the Foundation Day of the Institute (March 10,
2004). The awardees this year were:

Fortune Magazine’s “Asia’s Businessmen of the Year 2003” received by Shri Nandan Nilekani (B.Tech, EE, 1978) jointly with Shri N.R. Narayana Murthy, and the inclusion of Dr. Behruz Sethna (B.Tech, EE, 1971) in the honour list of the 100 Most Influential Georgians, published in 2003.
The Annual Alumni Day, which is a very popular event, was celebrated on December 28th,
2003, and the Class of 1978 celebrated their Silver Jubilee Reunion on December 27th. The highlight of the Alumni Day was a panel discussion on “Are we IITians doing enough for India?”, organized by the Silver Jubilee batch. The panel consisted of Shri Nandan Nilekani, Dr. Narendra Karmarkar, Shri Manohar Parrikar, Shri V.P. Baligar, and Shri Rajeev Khanolkar, all from the Class of 1978.
The 41st Convocation of IIT Bombay was held on Friday, August 8, 2003. Shri Rajiv
L. Gupta, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Bombay and Chairman and CEO, Rohm & Haas Co., USA, delivered the Convocation Address. Shri N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman & Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies Ltd., Bangalore, was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa).
IIT Bombay celebrated its 45th
Foundation Day on March 10th with Shri Rahul Bajaj, Chairman, Board of Governors as the Chief Guest. On this day, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Awards were conferred.
The Teachers’ Day was celebrated on September 5, 2003. The Chief Guest of the
occasion was Prof. M.G.K. Menon, Chairman, BOG, IIT Delhi. The awards for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. P.K. Patwardhan Technology Development Award and Best Teacher in Management award were presented.

strategic activities of the Institute. These provide excellent opportunities for our faculty and students to share current developments, interact with peers, and increase the visibility of

Alan Windle, University of Cambridge, U.K., presented a lecture on “Carbon Nanotubes: The Polymer Dimension”.
Centre for Distance Engineering Education Programme
Considering the national need for distance education and e-learning, IIT Bombay has established the Centre for Distance Engineering Education Programme (C-DEEP). The mission of C-DEEP is to disseminate the knowledge in various fields of engineering and science using modern technological tools. Currently,
a number of courses from various disciplines i.e., Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and in Core Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics), are under development at C-DEEP. Both video and web based lectures are developed to serve as resources for
engineering education. C-DEEP also provided the support to video produce the lecture series organized by School of Management.
A new video studio and a web development lab has been set-up under C-DEEP. The video production unit utilizes state of art
recording and editing equipment to produce high quality lectures for broadcast. The web-based courses are being developed using specially prepared templates, which incorporate the unique features of instructional design and e-learning principles, for enhanced pedagogic outcomes.
C-DEEP has facilitated video streaming of Eklavya TV channel through the C-DEEP server for perusal over the intranet. Through this, the video lectures from various experts
can be viewed at individual computers. In addition, C-DEEP activities include exploration of e-learning deployment strategies like, VCD, streaming multimedia over the web, interactive web based tutorials, question banks with solved problems, etc.
The DEP Remote Center of IITB located at the Goa University Campus was inaugurated Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on January 13, 2004.
Training is integral part of staff development at the Institute. Personnel Training & Development Cell had organised 41
training programmes and 2 workshops for the staff members during the year. Training was conducted in the areas such as Understanding Self and Others, Self Development and Awareness, Effective Communication, Interpersonal Relationships, Time Management, Roles and Responsibilities for Supervisors, Work Motivation, Computer Training, Introduction to Open Office (LINUX),
Fire Fighting training, Understanding and Implementation of Performance Management System, Managing Change Effectively, Written Communication, Principles of Effective Team Work and Work Planning. 921 participants attended the training/workshops. In addition, the Institute encouraged Officers to attend conference/workshops at other reputed Institutions to get abreast with the new developments in their areas of work.
To espouse the feelings of belonging and commitment, to enhance interaction amongst the staff, to acknowledge achievements and boost morale, a staff magazine was started. The
magazine named as ‘Sampark’ was released at a function held in December, 2003.
Institute recognizes the bravery and extraordinary contribution of staff on Republic Day function at the Institute. Two of the Security Personnel have been awarded for their
contribution in checking the leopard menace at the Institute last year. They could trap 8 leopards on the periphery of the campus during last year, in turn preventing their entry in to the Institute campus.
Hindi Cell continued to play its important role in the implementation of the Official Language Policy of Government of India. A
number of Hindi Workshops were organized for the staff members. One hundred twenty three staff members have participated in these Workshops. Fifteen staff members have passed the Hindi Typing Examination conducted by the Hindi Teaching Scheme of the Government of India. We are making sincere efforts to comply with the
Section 3(3) of the Official Language Act 1963. About 2189 documents were issued both in Hindi and English including 1247 degree certificates. The Medals and Awards presented to the students had inscription both in Hindi and English.
For propagation of Hindi we have started keeping popular Hindi Magazines at accessible places so that one can read them at their
own ease. English - Hindi and Hindi - Hindi dictionaries were provided to the Departments and Sections.
As an Annual Function, Hindi Utsav was celebrated with great enthusiasm. A Kavi Sammelan was organized on 14th September. The Students, Faculty and Staff Members recited their self-composed poems on various issues. Several Competitions like Song Competition, Hindi Dictation Competition, Hindi Essay
Writing Competition and Hindi Quiz Competitions were organised.
The 39th Inter IIT Sports Meet was conducted at IIT Bombay from 14th to 19th December 2003.
A special feature was that Directors of all the seven IITs attended the Opening Ceremony. The Inter IIT Sports Meet was
declared open by Shri Ramanathan Krishnan, who also inaugurated the new tennis courts. IIT Bombay secured the second position receiving gold medals in several events. IIT Bombay won the leading place in Cricket, Table Tennis (men’s and women’s), Tennis, Weight Lifting and Water Polo.
Hostel-4 won the General Championship in sports for male students while Hostel 10 won the General Championship for the
girls. Additionally, a special championship was conducted for all new entrants and the experiment was a success. The Annual State Level Swimming Gala was held in the month of February 2004 wherein participants from various parts
of Maharashtra took part in various swimming events.
Number of sports camps like Tennis, Basket ball, Badminton, Football, Cricket swimming and athletics were held in the month of April and May 2003 for the benefit of campus children.
National Service Scheme (NSS)
The NSS unit helped the slum children in their academics and the NSS students are assisting in spreading computer literacy amongst campus children.
The inter-hostel Cultural General Championship this year witnessed lesser events but with enhanced quality. The arrangement was such that there was minimal pressure on the participants. Hostel 5 lifted the cultural trophy and Hostel 4 received the second place.
The overall quality of the Performing Arts Festival were very good this time with some really commendable performances. Hostel 1,
4 and 13 with their great script and direction took away the coveted PAF trophy. Hostel 6, 8 & 11 received the second place with Hostel 2 and 5 finishing third.
Off campus, we did quite well in the different inter-collegiate festivals starting with Malhar 2003 (St. Xavier’s College) besides winning the Literary and Debating
trophies, we improved our performances in Fine Arts and Performing Arts to a great extent. IIT Bombay finished 5th in the overall tally which is one of the best showing of the institute since long.
“Anjali” a bhajan recital programme on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti was held on 2nd October 2003.
One of the most commendable achievements of IITB cultural enthusiasts this year came from Ahmedabad where our contingent lifted
the CHAOS 2004 trophy at IIM Ahmedabad. The decision of not sending a contingent to Saarang (IIT Madras festival) and concentrating only on CHAOS delivered fantastic results.
The annual cultural programme Mood Indigo 2003 was held December 2003, confirmed to be a major attraction amongst the College and
University students. Some of the major highlights of the festival were the performances of Lucky Ali, Antaragni, Pt. Rajan and Sajan Mishra, QED (Canadian Band) and the well-known play “Class of 84” by Rahul D’Cunha and associates. Indeed it was a memorable experience for the organisers and all the attendees of this
four day long cultural extravaganza. The IIT Bombay contingent defended the Mood Indigo trophy with an amazing performance.
The institute also witnessed a number of professional performances by eminent artists during the year. Two plays namely
“Trisanga” by Tom Alter and “Suman aur Sana” by Nadira Babbar and group were performed during the odd and even semesters respectively. Subha Mudgal, Kanak Rele and others mesmerized the audience with their wonderful performances. Several workshops by experts were also organised all round the year.
IIT Bombay hosted the SPIC-MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) National Annual
Convention, 2004. The convention was a confluence of various aspects of Indian culture, such as classical music, dance, yoga, theatre, poetry, folk arts and sufi spiritual music. More than 800 delegates from 150 SPIC-MACAY chapters from all over the country and thousands of arts fans attended the convention.
TECHFEST 2004, an annual Technological festival, was held in January 2004.
During Techfest there were a number of competitions, workshops, exhibitions and lectures. In one of the events called “Cliffhanger” students from Singapore, Sri Lanka and Nepal participated. In the Lecture Series eminent personalities delivered outstanding lectures. They were Dr. Kevin Warwick, Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading; Dr. Bharat Balasubramaniam, Vice President,
Engineering Technologies, Daimler Chrysler and Hon. Professor at Technical University of Berlin; Dr. Raghuram Rajan, Economist of the IMF and the Director of American Finance Association; Prof. Yash Pal; Prof. Alex Pentland and
Dr. Narendra Bhandari.
There was an exhibition by the Indian Navy depicting wide spectrum technologies used in the Navy with an aim of instilling a greater sense of patriotism and national
integrity amongst the youth. Air Force performed a breath-taking feat of Para jumping on January 26, the Republic Day.
In Technoholix Mr. Ferenc Cako of Cako Studios Hungary, performed a rare art in which the artist has developed a figurative
drawing/painting with sand, the images being projected onto a screen to the sound of music.
An Entrepreneurship Programme (EDP) was conducted by this Cell in which a series of lectures were conducted. Distinguished speakers from BSE and SEBI delivered lectures. A
certificate course in Managemaent Development was conducted to provide an insight into the managerial skills required to accomplish various functional areas to the participants.
Ideaz ’03 - an Intra-IIT event held for IIT undergraduates and graduate students to express their ideas in business terms and
form teams that combine technology and business strengths, was a major success.
Some of the events under Avenues, which captured the attention of corporates and students alike, were the Stock games, the Great Indian Advertising Bazaar, the Innovation
Fair, the Vintage Car Exhibition, the Adventure Camp and the Bizkrieg, the Business quiz.
The annual business plan competition, Eureka, provided impetus to many budding entrepreneurs providing them with help in the form of cash and kind. It helps its winners with services like Free Incubation, Free Quality testing, Free Web services, Free Chartered accountant and Free Legal consultancy.
We had embarked on the task of putting in place a responsible and responsive governance system, couple of years back. We
have remained focused in our efforts and have initiated several steps to simplify and update administrative and accounting practices to take on real issues that effect our ability to deliver so that we can contribute better and make a difference. The steps initiated by the Institute in broad basing its decision support
system has paid good dividends. The internal management structures and roles are being reviewed periodically to meet the changing requirements.
The IIT Bombay Advisory Council has played a catalytic role in helping the Institute to chart a new course in many ways. The
sharper focus of the Institute in increasing the doctoral student numbers and making it more attractive, entrepreneurship related activities, formation of cross disciplinary groups and identification of major research thrust areas, moving towards sustained, enhanced and productive linkages with the Industry are some of the areas, where IIT Bombay Advisory Council has played a key role.
To reflect our concern on the issue of Governance, a joint meeting of the Chairmen, Board of Governors and Directors of all the IITs was convened at IIT Bombay with Chairman
of the IIT Review Committee. We are looking forward to the recommendations of the Review Committee and hope this will give further fillip to some of our initiatives.
I would like to reiterate that the challenge before IIT Bombay, is to maintain and enhance its position as an Institute which excels in its education and research programmes.
We are indeed proud that based on the dedicated efforts of the faculty, staff and students, IIT Bombay continues to be rated as one of the top technical universities in the world. We have spelt out our Vision and Mission and the
Institute dedicates itself to work harder to make all our dreams come true. With the outstanding faculty and enthusiastic students, we are on a sound footing. We have taken a number of initiatives in the last few years and we have reason to feel happy with our performance.
I take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Human Resources Development for their continued support and faith in us. I
would like to thank Shri Rahul Bajaj and the Board of Governors, who have provided us encouragement and strength to take up new initiatives. In particular the vision, wisdom and commitment to excellence of
Shri Bajaj has helped the Institute gain in confidence and stature. It is my privilege to work closely with Shri Bajaj and receive his blessings and support for discharging my duties at the Institute.
Convocation marks the culmination of the academic achievements and we take pride in seeing bright young men and women graduating from the portals of IIT Bombay.
On behalf of the Institute, I extend my heartiest congratulations to all the graduating students who will receive their degrees today and special congratulations to those who have excelled for the award of medals and prizes. Our heartiest congratulations also to your family, specially your parents, for providing you
encouragement and support throughout your stay in IIT.
The degree that you will receive will open a number of opportunities enabling you to see the wider horizons of life marked by both prospects and problems. Inspiration and hard work are important for your success. You must remember that you the IIT graduates are among the brightest minds in the country and you have been privileged to get your education at one of the finest temples of learning. We look at you as tomorrow’s leaders and managers of new ideas and innovations, which will make a difference in the life of others around you. We would like to see your actions to be filled with infectious enthusiasm and zest. Always uphold the right human values of honesty, integrity, truthfulness and professional ethics. Learning is a life long process and you must continue to sharpen your skills during your professional career. We want you to be amongst the best in your peer groups and make your Alma Mater proud of you. We would like to follow your progress in your life and request you to remain in touch with us. As an alumnus, you will always be an important stake-holder in the growth of IIT Bombay. On behalf of the Institute, I wish you every success in your future endeavours.
